(Almost) Ready to Leave

This is blog 1 of the diary of our first trip to Africa. We’re off early on Wednesday morning, January 20^th and will arrive in Kigali on Saturday evening the 23^rd, with a 2 day stopover in Brussels.

The purpose of our trip is twofold – to see and learn more about Rwanda (and hopefully Burundi), and to help out at the Vunga vocational school. The school belongs to the Anglican Diocese of Shyogwe, which is near Gitarama, about 50 km southwest of Kigali. For some years now, the school has been supported by parishioners and friends of St. John’s Anglican Parish in Port Rowan, Ontario who have provided materiel, purchased land and buildings and sponsored students who could not otherwise afford to go to school. The trip itself has been organized by St John’s Port Rowan under a project they developed known as “Tourism with a Purpose”.

All told, we are 8 people making the trip. The six others hail from in and around St John’s in Port Rowan while we are from St John the Evangelist in Ottawa. Several of our fellow travellers have already been to the Diocese of Shyogwe and Vunga a few times and know the school and its staff well. The Diocese has proposed a full schedule of liturgical, educational and sight- seeing activities for us, but there should also be time to get together with some of the relatives of our Rwandan-Canadian friends and family.

Voici notre journal au sujet de notre premier voyage en Afrique!...

Nous partons le 20 janvier 2010 d’Ottawa et arriverons à Kigali le 23 janvier avec un petit détour à Bruxelles pour quelques jours. J’ai peine à croire que notre voyage est maintenant une réalité.

Le but de notre voyage est de découvrir ce beau pays qu’est le Rwanda et si possible de se rendre également au Burundi mais le but principale est de passer une bonne période de notre temps au Centre de Formation Professionnel de Vunga. Il y aura aussi du temps pour visiter. L’école appartient au Diocèse Anglican de Shyogwe près de Gitarama environ 50 km au sud-ouest de Kigali. Nous demeurerons à Alleluia Guest House qui appartient au diocèse.

L’école est supportée par les paroissiens et amis de la paroisse St. John de Port Rowan, Ontario. Ils fournissent du matériel pour l’école, ont acheté un terrain, construit des bâtiments et parrainent plusieurs étudiants qui sans leur aide ne pourraient suivre les cours. Ce voyage a été organisé par l’église St-John.

Nous sommes un total de 8 personnes qui se rendront au Rwanda. Les 6 autres personnes sont de la région de Port Rowan et Don et moi sommes de l’église St-John the Evangelist d’Ottawa. Plusieurs personnes du groupe sont à leur deuxième ou troisième voyage à Shyogwe et Vunga et connaissent très bien l’école et les éducateurs. Le diocèse a préparé un horaire très chargé.

Nous voulons également garder du temps pour visiter les parents, amis, cousins de nos amis africains d’Ottawa.

Enfin nous sommes presque prêts pour le grand voyage. On a reçu tous les VACCINS_ Méningite – Fièvre jaune – Hépatite B – Choléra – Typhoïde…….et les valises sont presque prêtes.
